Pregnancy and new motherhood are truly life-altering experiences. During the maternity year, first-time pregnant women often feel more vulnerable, more confused, and more disoriented than they've ever felt before. This is the reason I started Maternitique: to help support women and teach them about safe products that will nurture and protect their babies and themselves. But I know I'm not alone in having that goal.
So every month I search the internet, magazines and social media for new sources for safe, healthy, nourishing products that will make pregnant and new mothers feel beautiful and better about the changes to their bodies. It's not a simple task! There are few people who have the skills, knowledge, first-hand experience, training, resources and resolve to create a business that is capable of serving pregnant women, and their babies, first.
3Girls Holistic, a new maternity skin care line, is one of those rare undertakings. I'm delighted to introduce Maternitique customers to 3Girls Holistic, and their founder, Amy Paolinelli.
With natural, organic and safe-to-use products for birth, postpartum healing and breastfeeding, 3Girls Holistic offers maternity products that truly care for your body. I do my due diligence when selecting products to offer to pregnant women, but it's hard to convey the entire context of conversation and information on a product page.
So after Amy and I chatted and I spent a few weeks using 3Girls Holistic products myself, I asked her the following questions. This way, you can get to know her a little bit, too! (That's Amy, to the left.)
Whatís the story behind the name 3Girls Holistic?
When 3Girls Holistic started, it was three friends: Christy Funk, Carrie Ibbetson and me. Christy is an eco-beauty expert and Carrie is a holistic oral health coach. [Amy is an herbalist as well as certified lactation consultant.] Our idea initially was to build a website that offered a wide array of holistic based health information. All three of us are passionate about holistic living, and figured that between our various areas of expertise we could create a well-rounded resource for other women.
It was at that same time that Christy and I created our skin care line. Since we were all working together anyway, and because people seemed to really like the name, we used it for that as well.
Unfortunately, of the three of us, I am the only one still a part of 3Girls Holistic. Building a business is a ton of work, and I think we were all a little bit naive going into it. Christy and Carrie were both growing other businesses in addition to being moms, and there simply wasnít enough time in the day for everything. We still support one another, and I am forever grateful to them for helping to get it all off the ground.
How was gardening or the natural world influential to you growing up?
My mom loved nature! In Southern California, which is where I grew up, they have a tendency to butcher trees in the name of tree trimming. My mom literally tied herself to the tree in our front yard in order to prevent them from cutting any of it down. My love of nature didnít really manifest itself until college, but has grown exponentially since then.
And now that you're a mother?
I now am an avid gardener, and find such comfort and peace when I am surrounded by the quiet of nature. I make sure to engage my kids when Iím gardening or using herbs around the house for various things in order to promote a sense of respect and awe of what this earth provides for us.
What effect did pregnancy have on you?
Before I became pregnant with my first child, I lived next to a wonderful woman who truly changed the course of my life. I had never given much thought to childbirth, breastfeeding, etc., but she was a former La Leche League leader and wanted to at least plant the seed of those things in my mind. Needless to say, her seed grew into a massive tree! Because of her, when I became pregnant with my daughter, I searched out natural child birth classes, was determined to exclusively breastfeed, and eventually went on to become a Hypnobabies Instructor and IBCLC.
Since that time, my passion for birth, breastfeeding and natural living has been unwavering. I love it all and feel so lucky to be able to be a part of things that I find such meaning in.
Supporting breastfeeding women has been one of my favorite things; when I am able to help a mom during that raw period following childbirth, by not only helping with breastfeeding, but also by listening and honoring her birth story, I truly feel blessed!
You are one of the few companies on Earth to offer postpartum care products. I can only guess you had some surprises after giving birth. Care to share your postpartum story?
To be honest, my births were all very easy. Breastfeeding, on the other hand, not so much! I gritted my teeth through the first few weeks of nursing my oldest, just figuring that was how it was supposed to be. And then with my third, thanks to a posterior tongue-tie, my nipples were cracked and bleeding Ė not fun!
My husband still laughs at how I had him trekking all over town looking for Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Butter. He sure had a fun time asking the teenage boy sales clerk at Target for that one Ė they directed him to the dairy section. ;)
Amy, youíre training with Aviva Romm, one of North Americaís foremost experts in herbal remedies for pregnant women, new moms and children. Can you think of one or two common myths people have about herb safety when it comes to fertility, pregnancy, breastfeeding or baby care?
I think the biggest is that because herbs havenít been tested for safety in these populations, that itís best to avoid them all. The ironic thing though is that most of the pharmaceutical drugs that are given to these same groups havenít been tested for safety either.
I think our culture promotes a fear and wariness over natural remedies, when, in fact, there is so much history and anecdotal evidence available that you can feel comfortable taking many different herbs and homeopathic remedies during these times.
Are all 3Girls Holistic products safe for use during pregnancy?
Yes! We have a strict zero toxin policy. They are even safe for the littlest of babes! We donít think it should be any other way. Why put something on yourself that you wouldnít put on your baby? Youíre just as important as she is, but we often forget that.
Nourishing ourselves is so important, and I know I am guilty of taking better care of my kids than I do of myself, but it really shouldnít be that way. As important as they are to us, we are to them.
Ok, itís cold and flu season. Pregnant women should avoid so many over-the-counter symptom relievers. Iím going to put you on the spot and ask: What are your favorite natural immune supporters for your family that would also be safe for breastfeeding and pregnant moms?
A handful of essentials oils such as Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Clove and Thyme Ė great to diffuse in your home to keep the germs away!
What do you wish for every first time new mother or newly pregnant mother?
To be able to truly enjoy those first weeks postpartum with her first child.
Every child is special, but with that first one, itís just you and your baby. Youíll never have another time like that. A time when you can really sleep when the baby sleeps, cuddle all day on the couch reading or watching movies, just sit and gaze at your new little love for hours on end without needing to meet anyone elseís needs. Itís a fleeting time and is so unique Ė such a gift in this life!
