Lip Makeup for Pregnant Women
First, let me take a second to explain how cool it is that V.Sachar MD has created the world’s first makeup line for pregnant women and why I’m so excited to have it at Maternitique. Maternity clothing is a given, right. You know why you buy maternity clothing: because your clothes no longer fit. But why buy new makeup if you’re planning to become a mom?
Let’s take lip color as an example: it should be common sense that when you wear makeup on your lips, small amounts will be ingested from eating and drinking. Well, in December 2012, the FDA issued a detailed report of lead content in commercial lipsticks. If you take a second to click over to that report, you’ll see your household brands listed there, including
Burt’s Bees (which, by the way, is owned by Clorox).
Lead readily crosses the placenta and has been detected in the fetal brain as early as the end of the first trimester. Elevated lead levels in pregnan
Miscarriagecy are associated with:
- Low birth weight
- Impaired neural development
Dr. Vik Sachar, the creator of makeup for pregnant women, is a high-risk pregnancy specialist. He explains one of his reasons for creating lip makeup for pregnant women:
"The lead in lipsticks may come from the commercial dyes used, and because it is applied to your lips, there is always a small amount that is absorbed and/or ingested. These levels build up over time and may pose a risk associated with bio-accumulation."
After years of wearing lip makeup (and by virtue of living in a post-industrial society), by the time you get pregnant, you may already have some lead in your body. But why add more?
Cleaning and greening your makeup box with safer, natural brands of makeup is a good idea no matter when you do it, but before and during pregnancy is a fabulous idea. Besides lead, there are a whole host of other sketchy ingredients in over-the-counter store makeup brands that pregnant women would want to avoid (and personally, I do, too, and I don’t have more children in my future). Formaldehyde, for example, used as a preservative in some makeup, is a carcinogen. Dear baby, here, have some formaldehyde in your amniotic fluid. No way!
So, if you’re looking for a new shade of lipstick or lipgloss (or both) for Valentine’s Day, check out the following all-natural mineral lip makeup for pregnant women:
All of V.Sachar MD mineral lip colors are made without:
- FD&C dyes
- Carmine colorants
- Bismuth chloride
- Petroleum-based oils
- Animal testing or ingredients
In fact, if you click to one of the products and look at the ingredient lists, you'll see there are more ingredients left OUT of this makeup for pregnant women than put IN! Plus, the ingredients that are in this makeup are nourishing to your skin.
More Makeup for Pregnant Women
While you’re on your quest for red or pink makeup for Valentine’s Day (or any day!), consider making the switch with your nail color, too.
Your basic store and salon brands of nail polish are gradually getting cleaned up, with many brands such as OPI and Essie taking out the big three toxins that pregnant women should avoid: BHT (toluene), DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate), and formaldehyde.
But even these so-called “3-free” brands contain a slew of other ingredients that are carcinogenic. And, even if exposing yourself to such small amounts doesn’t bug you, nail polish contains acetone that dries out your nail beds, damages nails and stains them, too.
Scotch Naturals non-toxic nail polish is the cleanest nail color brand available. Water-based, instead of acetone-based, it’s actually breathable, allowing your nails to get oxygen and stay healthy. It’s non-staining, vegan, and contains absolutely nothing you need to be concerned about using during pregnancy. Yay!
Here are the shades of red and pink Scotch Naturals available:
- Kiltlifter (classic red creme)
- To Hell With Swords & Garters (deep scarlet red creme)
- Tartan Swizzle (magenta creme)
- Whisper (pale pink shimmer)
- MacBeth's Dream (romantic mulberry creme)
- Widow Woods' Nightcap (glittering deep burgundy--for some reason, the photo looks purple on my computer. It's not. It's deep dark red glitter.)
- Southern Charmer (shimmering pearl pink)
Like V.Sachar MD makeup for pregnant women, Scotch Naturals non-toxic nail colors leave OUT more ingredients than they have IN:
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)-free
- Animal product-free

Have a happy Valentine’s Day,
