We all know by now that sunscreens are an essential part of skin care, but are they pregnancy safe? Protecting skin from UVA and UVB rays helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines, dark spots and, of course, skin cancer. And because 70% of pregnant women will develop the mask of pregnancy—dark patches on the face around the eyes, cheeks and forehead—daily use of facial sunscreen is a must. Preventing the mask of pregnancy is much easier than fading it.

But, we also know that most chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone, which mimics hormones in the body and is easily absorbed into the bloodstream. While oxybenzone hasn’t been isolated as a cause of birth defects, it has been associated with low birth weight in female babies. Some doctors feel the concern about skin cancer trumps the concern about prenatal exposure to this chemical whose impact in fetal development is unclear, but others suggest women who are trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding choose an alternative sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide instead.

We're proud to have several full-spectrum sunscreens made specifically for pregnant women with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—minerals that form a barrier over skin cells and reflect the UVA/UVB rays. Mineral-based sunscreens are infamous for leaving a white residue on skin, which has made them less popular.

Each of the pregnancy safe sunscreens we offer at Maternitique, however, has been specially formulated to be streak-free when properly applied. None contains parabens or phthalates—xenoestrogens like oxybenzone that can disrupt the endocrine system not only in your body, but also in your developing baby. All of the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sunscreens below provide full-spectrum coverage and contain non-nanoparticle minerals—so they’re not small enough to absorb into your bloodstream either.
