Pregnancy Acne

Pregnancy Acne Treatments for Oily Skin

If you have oily skin prone to breakouts anyway, and pregnancy is just making things worse, help is here.

  1. Start with a gel-based facial cleanser that contains a light acid to neutralize your oil, such as Blemish Control Facial Wash, Let's Be Clear Facial Cleanser or Bella B Foaming Face Wash. Alternatively, use Moroccan Clay Facial Scrub and Mask daily as a scrub (if you prefer a gel cleanse, save the Moroccan Clay for use 1-3x weekly as a mask). Use lukewarm water and a gentle, circular motion to cleanse face.
  2. Follow cleansing with an astringent toner such as Calm pH Toner or BalanC pH Toner.
  3. If desired, add an intensive skin-balancing treatment such as Rehab Serum for Pregnancy Acne or Truth Be Told Brightener in mornings on affected areas.
  4. Choose a light moisturizer such as Organic Bearberry Skin Brightening Moisturizer, Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator, or Face & Body Cream for Pregnancy Acne.
  5. In the mornings, top it all off with a barrier sunblock such as Anti-Chloasma Facial Sunscreen, Organic Anti-Aging Sunscreen, or Protect & Reflect Facial Sunscreen.
  6. Before bed, dab on Overnight SOS Blemish Lotion, Organic Citrus Blemish Lotion or Acne Control Spot Treatment to shrink blemishes. Any of these spot treatments will begin to shrink blemishes overnight, with complete clearing usually within three days.

Pregnancy Acne Treatments for Dry Skin

Believe it or not, skin that's under-moisturized is prone to breakouts, too, because skin overcompensates for the dryness by over-producing oils that clog pores. Pregnancy hormones interfere with your skin's natural production of oils, knocking the whole process out of balance. Restore clarity to your skin by restoring balance.

  1. Start with a cream-based facial cleanser such as Organic Stripped Cleanser, or Facial Scrub for Pregnancy Acne. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, circular motion to cleanse face.
  2. Follow cleansing with an astringent-free, moisture-boosting toner such as Hydrate Cucumber & Aloe Toner.
  3. If desired, add an intensive moisturizing treatment such as Youth Glow Omega Face Complex.
  4. Choose a hydrating moisturizer such as Organic Luminescent Moisturizer or Organic Dew-Luxe Moisturizer.
  5. In the mornings, top it all off with a barrier sunblock such as Anti-Chloasma Facial Sunscreen or Protect & Reflect Facial Sunscreen.
  6. Once per week, use Moroccan Clay Facial Scrub and Mask as a mask to draw out impurities and open pores.
  7. Before bed, dab on Overnight SOS Blemish Lotion, Organic Citrus Blemish Lotion or Acne Control Spot Treatment to shrink blemishes. Any of these spot treatments will begin to shrink blemishes overnight, with complete clearing usually within three days.

Pregnancy Acne Treatments for Sensitive Skin

Even if you wouldn't consider your skin "sensitive" before pregnancy, these new hormones have a way of finding new ways to irritate you. Skin that feels a bit itchy, inflamed or irritated, or that develops little red bumps could become a problem during pregnancy. When it comes to sensitive skin, less is more: less fragrance, less cleansing, less interference, less potentially allergic ingredients.

  1. Start with a gentle facial cleanser such as Organic Fruit Face Wash that doesn't have any alpha hydroxy acids or lactic acids in it. Use lukewarm water, a very small amount of cleanser, and a gentle, circular motion to wash your face. Try cleansing once per day (at bed-time) to see if reduced cleansing helps your skin calm down. In mornings, simply rinse your face with cool or lukewarm water.
  2. If no negative effects result, follow cleansing with a balancing toner such as Hydrate Cucumber & Aloe pH Toner.
  3. For daytime moisturizing and skin-calming, apply either the Youth Glow Omega Face Complex or Truth Be Told Skin Brightener in the morning, after your cool-water rinse.
  4. For your moisturizer at night, we recommend Organic Luminescent Moisturizer.
  5. For your daily sunscreen, apply either Protect & Reflect Daily SPF 30 or Organic Anti-Aging Mineral Sunblock after your moisturizer.
  6. Use Moroccan Clay Facial Scrub and Mask once per week as a mask.
  7. Before bed, dab on Overnight SOS Blemish Lotion, Organic Citrus Blemish Lotion or Acne Control Spot Treatment to shrink blemishes. Any of these spot treatments will begin to shrink blemishes overnight, with complete clearing usually within three days.

Pregnancy Acne Treatments for Mature Skin

During pregnancy, hormonal surges can spur sudden oily patches on your skin and wreak havoc with pores which leads to blemish eruptions. Even if your last acne breakout was nearly two decades ago, you may find yourself looking like a teenager again during pregnancy. When your pre-pregnancy skin care regimen was focused on fighting fine lines and slackened skin tone and other ravages of time, here are the suggestions for you now:

  1. Start with a cleanser that's rich in anti-oxidants such as Let's Be Clear Facial Cleanser, Organic Fruit Face Wash, Bella B Foaming Face Wash or Organic Stripped Cleanser. Use lukewarm water and a gentle, circular motion to cleanse face.
  2. Follow cleansing with a few spritzes of BalanC pH Toner.
  3. Next, apply an anti-aging treatment with hyaluronic acid in it, such as Rehab Serum for Pregnancy Acne or Truth Be Told Skin Brightener all over. Alternatively, apply Youth Glow Omega Face Complex.
  4. For a moisturizer, we recommend Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator or Organic Luminescent Moisturizer. If you use Youth Glow Omega Face Complex, you may not need an additional moisturizer.

Cystic acne during pregnancy and stubborn spots along the chin line and hair line can be maddeningly hard to treat. For all types of pregnancy acne, but especially these troublesome types, be sure that you're:

  • Drinking filtered water
  • Reducing or eliminating refined sugars and processed foods in favor of eating whole grains and whole foods
  • Taking an Omega 3 DHA supplement, which is linked to clearer complexions

Still having trouble? Talk with your health care provider about switching to a different prenatal vitamin. Iodine, iron, vitamin A and even calcium and magnesium have been linked to acne breakouts, including cystic and chronic acne.
