A New Year's Resolution for Pregnant Women

Posted by Administrator to Pregnancy
With Christmas and Hannukah behind us, it's New Year's time, and that means New Years Resolutions! All over the Internet, blogging women and the experts who advise them are writing about their New Year's resolutions.

Some people find New Year's resolutions to be an optimistic way to face the days ahead, with visions and goals and a belief in oneself and one's capacity for self-improvement. Others regard New Year's resolutions as a waste of time and energy, or as irrelevant. Some people feel pressured by the very idea of setting goals for the New Year.

As a pregnant woman, your own feelings about New Year's resolutions could be any one of the above.

If you're contemplating setting a New Year's resolution or two for yourself, and you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant in 2014, here's something for you to consider:

enjoy 2014 pregnancy
Resolve to enjoy your pregnancy.

Here's why a New Year's Resolution to enjoy your pregnancy in 2014 can be such a good thing for you:

Positive feelings during pregnancy can be contagious—engendering positive feelings with:
  • your partner,
  • your health care provider
  • and other mothers and friends who will be your support network after baby arrives.

Taking pleasure in your pregnancy and having a positive regard for the experience of being pregnant can also help you:
  • develop a prenatal bond with your baby
  • accept your identity as "mother,"
  • help ease the stress that comes after birth when there's a new baby in the house.

Positive feelings about being pregnant can also help create a positive attitude about birth. And birth is WAY easier when you go through it with a positive, open attitude. In fact, facing birth with fear or negative attitudes can shut down or stunt your body's production of oxytocin—the hormone responsible for moving your birth along.

Studies show that stress during pregnancy suppresses the developing baby's immune system and that mothers who are highly stressed during pregnancy have children who are more prone to illness and disease. It might not be too far into the future until we discover that a corollary is true: that positive feelings and celebrating one's pregnancy help us have healthier, happier babies.

If you're a pregnant woman, or planning to become pregnant in 2014, make it a New Year's resolution to truly, thoroughly enjoy your pregnancy. You'll be glad you did!
